Namma Bengaluru witnessed a unique event of WALK-A-THON, on Thursday, with over 2500 Civil engineers participating for spreading awareness to the society on good practices in construction of buildings.
Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), [ACCE(I)], a professional body of Civil Engineers, has been working towards protecting the rights and interest of Civil Engineers across the country and contributing for a healthy growth of the society. In the after-math of series of building failures in Bengaluru over the last few years, Bangalore Centre of ACCE(I) decided to organize this unique event of walkathon.
Civil Engineers in four groups walked from four different directions of Bangalore, and converged at Freedom Park. All along the walkathon, participants displayed placards and banners creating awareness on Civil Engineering profession and professional construction practices to the citizens at large.
Smt.Tejaswini Ananthkumar, a qualified civil engineer & Social activist, stressed the need for an ACT for Civil Engineering profession. She requested the Government to consider passing The Professional Civil Engineers Act for the good of the profession and the society at large.
Mr. Shrikant S Channel, Chairman, ACCE(I), Bangalore Centre was forthcoming in stating that NBC-2016 provisions should be incorporated in the local building bye-laws, professional Civil Engineers Act should be promulgated and Association members should have a presence in various commissions connected to construction. He stressed that publicity should be given by the Government to involve Civil, Structural, Geo-technical, and Construction Engineers in all building constructions.
Mr. Ajit Kumar, Secretary, ACCE(I), Bangalore Centre, opined that non-implementation of NBC- 2016 provisions has been the main cause in the several building collapses that we have witnessed recently. He strongly suggested that only technically qualified professionals should be engaged for supervision and construction of buildings.
Er. Vijay Sanap, National President, ACCE(I), Dr. M U Aswath, immediate past National President, ACCE(I), and Dr. Arvind Galagali, senior academician and advisor to GOK, all stressed for regulation of Civil Engineering profession that will help in mitigating the building failures in future.
