OLYMPICS conducted this year which is going on in Tokyo, Japan is no doubt Grand Sports event of the world. After the Grand opening ceremony and lighting of Olympic cauldron was set ablaze by Naomi Osaka, Tennis player from Japan , the final torchbearer to carry the flame. On opening day India has secured Silver Medal by Mirabai Chanu in 49 kgs Weightlifting. Officially it is called The Games of XXXII Olympiad or more popularly TOKYO 2020. Some of important facts about this Olympics are listed below
THE MASCOT
The organisers has named this mascot as ‘Miraitowa’ a tongue-twisting one which is combination of Japanese words for future and eternity. It conveys the hope for a bright future lasting forever.
THE MEDAL
The medals for Tokyo 2020 Olympics was designed by Junichi Kawanishi, a graphic designer from Osaka. It features Greek goddess of victory Nike along with Olympic symbol. All the medals are prepared entirely from recycled metals – from 79,000 tonnes of used consumer electronics including games consoles, laptops and digital cameras.
MOTTO : United by Emotion.
The Games Motto encapsulates the Games vision, capturing that the host city wishes to convey entire world “ United by Emotion” express the hope that spectators, volunteers and athletes from over 200 Olympic Committees as well as billions watching on television and online across the world to understand that there is more that unites than divides them. It is said united we stand but divided we fall together.
Some interesting numbers for Tokyo 2020 are
- 205 numbers of countries and regions that will participate by sending sportsmen and women to compete with more than 11000 athletes.
- In terms of final extra budget due to postponement of the games for retaining staff and new infection prevention steps $ 2.70 billion.
- The youngest athlete is 12 years – Syrian table tennis player Hend Zaza.
- Oldest is Australian equestrian Mary Henna her sixth Olympic appearance at the age of 66 years.
- 4 number of sports making debut – Karate, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing.
- Number of events total 339 will compete in 33 sports.
- 13 number of years it has taken for Japan’s beloved baseball and its women’s equivalent softball to return to the Games.
Interesting Facts
- The Olympic Village where athletes stay where 11000 are housed will have state of art facilities 24/7 dining halls with roughly 700 food options of various food varieties Halal , vegetarian to gluten-free.
- 143 internal shuttle buses are autonomous with nine bus stops around the main facilities
- In the housing complex, beds have been made in cardboard and are 100 per cent recyclable while blackout curtains have been installed which can be used to sleep at any time during the day.
INDIAN CONTINGENT
Sending the first athlete at 1900 Games in Paris, India has won a grand total of 28 medals till last Game which includes 9 Gold, 7 Silver and 12 Bronze. Over years Authorities and all stake holders have been improving the facilities, infrastructure and budget and this Game India has biggest contingent of 120 sports persons- 52 women and 68 men.
Indians are competing in following sports this Olympics : Archery, Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Equestrian, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling. The biggest sportsmen are in SHOOTING
Though all the athletes have capacity and capabilities to win a medal for India as they have come through many hardship and hurdles and training and practice based on the past record prediction are given below for academic purpose.
DEEPIKA KUMARI – Archery : Has won in Common Wealth Games, Asian Championship, World and has regained World No.1 ranking. She is from Jharkhand and yet to show her potential in Olympics where she exited in first round at London 2012.
P V SINDHU- Badminton : After Saina Nehwal, P V Sindu is undisputed star now. The reigning world champion had entire country watching breathlessly for a gold medal in last Olympics but settled for Silver in thrilling match. Past performance : Silver medal in Rio Olympics 2016.
Bajrang Punia – Wrestling, 65kg – Son of a wrestler Balvan Sing Punia India has big hope on Bajrang Punia the only Indian wrestler to win three medals at World Championship – 2 Bronze and 1 silver. It is debut for Bajrang Punia in Olympics.
Mirabai Chanu- Wrestling , 49kg- proud moment for India has won SILVER MEDAL in this Olympics.
Vinesh Phogat- Wrestling, 53kg- Raised in wrestler family which has been made Bollywood blockbuster Dangal. She made tragic exit in Rio 2016 Olympics after her injury in halfway in quarter finals and has been making good progress. She is in top form for last one year and big hope to India for a medal.
Neeraj Chopra- Jevelin throw- The debut 23 years old is one of the brightest hope has been in fine touch with seasons best through 88.07 meters just behind German Johannes Vetter -96.29 meters and Poland’s Marcin Krukowski 89.55 meters.
